Getting Your Boat to Go Where You Want it To: Steer Then Gear
We find that many boaters struggle with how to maneuver their boat around tighter areas like docks. Often, we’ll see boaters frustrated as their boat won’t accurately go in the direction they’d like it to, or boaters might find themselves approaching the docks or their boat slip too quickly at the wrong angle.
We understand that getting your boat to go in an accurate and precise direction can be difficult! A technique we’ve found quite helpful for our boating guests is the “steer then gear” or “point and shoot” method. It’s a technique we use as boaters ourselves, and we also teach the technique in our on-water Build a Boater training programs and our orientation sessions for our new Boating Club members.
Using the “steer then gear” technique, you can get your boat to handle better, especially in tight quarter maneuvering around docks. Using the “steer then gear” technique, boaters first pick the direction they want the boat to go, turn the wheel in that direction and then put the boat gear. Utilizing this “steer then gear” method, you can get your boat to handle more accurately, going in the direction you want it to go.
We’ve created a few demonstration videos about the “Steer then Gear” method, including the video linked below. You can also check out another video demonstrating this boating technique here.
