If you live in New Jersey and the days feel short, plus your local lake is frozen solid, there’s a good chance one thing is happening: boat show season is here.
Between the kickoff of the New York Boat Show in January and the NJ Boat Sale & Expo in February, winter boat shows in New Jersey are where many buyers – especially newbies – make their first real step into boating.
Boat shows are exciting. But, they can be overwhelming. And if you’re not careful, you can walk out thinking you made a great decision – only to start second-guessing it once spring rolls around. As a long-standing New Jersey boat dealer that’s attended (and staffed) more boat shows than we can count, we’ve seen what works – and where some buyers go wrong. Here are our top six tips to help you stay focused, ask the right questions, and get the most out of any boat show you’re attending, whether it’s your first time, you’re ready to buy, or you’re just browsing.
Why Boat Shows Matter – Especially in New Jersey
Winter boat shows serve a real purpose, particularly in New Jersey. During winter, most boats in our area – new and pre-owned alike – are shrink-wrapped, winterized, and tucked away until spring. Winter boat shows allow buyers to:
- Board multiple boats in one place
- Compare layouts, finishes, and features side-by-side
- Touch and feel what they might buy (which matters more than people realize)
- Explore brands they might not encounter at a single boat dealership
All great things that are exciting! But, boat shows can also overwhelm first-time boat buyers quickly. So, our first tip speaks directly to that challenge:
Tip #1: Step Aboard Everything… Then Slow Down
Boat shows are not the place to rush. Grab a map, walk the floor and use boat shows to:
- Sit in every seat on the boat (Yes. Every. Single. Seat.)
- Open compartments and storage areas
- Look closely at upholstery, hinges, hardware and more
- Picture how you’ll actually use the boat – not just how it looks
Quality shows up in the details. If you’ve been around boats a while, you’ll start to notice differences between brands and start paying attention to things like:
- Fit and finish (For example: are the edges of the fiberglass and metals on the boat smooth to the touch or rough?)
- Seat ergonomics (If you’re looking for comfort, be sure to look for plush seating and high-quality upholstery.)
- Storage accessibility (Visualize what you need to stow. Is it easy to get to?)
- Helm layout and visibility (Take a seat in the Captain’s chair and get a feel for it!)
This is also the moment to start asking yourself a few questions about how you imagine your time out on the water. Ask yourself questions like these:
Who will be on the boat with me most often? Kids? Friends? And what do I want to do? Enjoy quiet cruising, watersports or a mix of both?

These are exactly the kinds of questions we walk through with guests who are just starting out on their boat-buying journey.
Boat shows are also ideal for comparison shopping. You may find that the triple pontoon you thought would never suit you actually checks all the boxes (and more!). And more surprisingly, perhaps it’s a better fit than the sporty fiberglass boat you’ve been eyeing up all this time. Board one boat, take notes and then compare it to the next. Take advantage of so many brands and boats being under one roof at the same time.
Tip #2: Don’t Let “Boat Show Specials” Rush a Major Decision
From our perspective and experience, boat dealers invest heavily in attending a boat show. Booth space, transport of the boats, staffing at the show, printed materials, giveaways – it all adds up quickly. Naturally, there’s pressure to sell boats on the show floor to make that investment a smart business move. That pressure is what often gives rise to “boat show specials.”
Here’s the truth most boat buyers may not know, but need to understand:
- Some boat show deals are genuinely good
- Some boat show deals are simply dressed up discounts presented as “urgent”
- Most boat show deals are not worth rushing into if you’re unsure
If you’ve done your homework, understand exactly what you’re buying, and feel confident about your purchase, great! Move forward.
But if you’re still asking yourself basic questions and aren’t feeling 100% confident, don’t let a show-only incentive make the decision for you. Buying a boat is a major investment. It deserves more than a split-second commitment made on a crowded convention center floor.
Tip #3: Understand the REAL Cost of Boating
In our experience, the real cost of boating is the most overlooked part of boat ownership – and the #1 reason that drives new owners away from the sport down the road. Ever heard that saying “The two best days of a boater’s life are the day they buy a boat, and the day they sell it?” We’re pretty convinced it started with a lack of awareness as to how much boating actually costs.
Yes, owning a boat can be incredible. We hear stories every season about unforgettable memories, stunning sunsets, and time well spent on the water. There really is something uniquely special about being on a boat with family and friends.
But before buying, make sure you understand:
- Where will the boat be kept? (At a marina? On a trailer? Somewhere else?) Where and how you choose to keep your boat during a season has a price tag attached to it.
- Annual maintenance, winterization and spring recommission costs
- Insurance requirements, registration fees and other details
- Fuel, gear, safety equipment and ongoing upkeep costs
One of the biggest mistakes first-time buyers make is focusing entirely on the cost of the boat itself without fully understanding what ownership entails – or how to operate the boat safely and confidently once they have it. We suggest new boaters use our free, handy boating cost calculator to better understand the true cost of ownership.
Tip #4: Know New Jersey’s Boating Requirements Before You Buy
If you plan to operate a powerboat in New Jersey, you’ll need a New Jersey Boating Safety Certificate.
This is not optional.
Some first-time boat buyers discover this after purchasing, which adds stress to an already busy spring season. Boat shows are a great time to ask questions not just about boats – but about what’s required to use them legally and safely in New Jersey.
Understanding licensing and education early helps you avoid delays and ensures your first season starts smoothly. And we’re here to help with all of it. At Bridge Marina, we host the state-approved New Jersey Boating Safety Certificate Course and also offer hands-on lessons that help new boaters learn to boat safely and confidently.
Tip #5: Have an “After the Boat Show” Plan
A successful boat show doesn’t end when you leave the building. Make sure you have a plan of what to do next. We suggest you ask yourself:

- Who should I follow up with?
- What boat(s) or dealer(s) stood out – and why?
- Do I need more education or hands-on experience before buying?
- Is ownership right for me right now? Should I look at other options like boat clubs or boat rentals in New Jersey?
Some buyers walk away realizing boating isn’t the right fit yet. Others leave more excited – and more focused – than ever. Both outcomes are great in our view, as you’re more informed either way!

Tip #6: Boat Shows Should Be Fun!
Boat shows are meant to be enjoyable. They’re a perfect chance to beat the “winter blues” and start dreaming about summer, plus there’s plenty of vendors, activities, and entertainment for kids and adults alike.
So, spend a Saturday afternoon or an evening after work warm and cozy indoors, enjoying all things boating this winter – but keep it all in perspective. The best decisions are made when you’re well informed and intentional – not pressured.
Final Thoughts: Use Boat Shows in New Jersey as a Tool, Not a Trap

They’re a perfect place to learn, compare, and explore – not a place to rush or feel pressured into a decision. Whether you’re a first-time buyer, a family exploring your summer options, or a serious shopper ready to buy this year, the goal is the same:
Leave informed. Leave confident. And leave excited, but for the right reasons.
